The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a 2001 epic fantasy film, written by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954–1955) and directed by Peter Jackson. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), followed by, The Two Towers (2002) and The Returnof the King (2003), which also written by by J. R. R. Tolkien. They were distributed by New Line Cinema. Considered to be one of the biggest and most ambitious film projects ever undertaken, with an overall budget of $281 million the entire project took eight years, with the filming for all three films done simultaneously and entirely in New Zealand. The series was a major financial success, with the films collectively being among the highest-grossing film series of all time. The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded, winning 17 out of 30 total Academy Award nominations.

The story tells of the young hobbit Frodo Baggins who has found a Ring, which the Dark Lord Sauron looking for. Fordo and eight companions who form the Fellowship of the Ring begin their journey to destroy to Mount Doom in the land of Mordor, the only place where the Ring can be destroyed. The film was highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike who considered it to be a landmark in film-making and an achievement in the fantasy film genre. It also considered as a one of the greatest fantasy film ever made. The film was a massive box office success, earning over $871 million worldwide against its budget $93 million. And becoming the second highest-grossing film of 2001 in the U.S. and worldwide.

Plot

In the Second Age of Middle Earth, the Dark Lord Sauron defeated by Isildur by chopping off the Ring from his body. Ring prevent its destruction corrupting Isildur mind who killed by Orcs. Ring lost for 2500 years until discovered by Sméagol (Gollum). After 500 years,unexpectedly recovered by a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Sixty years later, Bilbo celebrates his 111th birthday and is visited by his friend Gandalf the Grey. He leaves his inheritance to his nephew Frodo, vanished from his party, stay with the elves of Rivendell. Gandalf convinces him to leave the Ring for Frodo, and Gandolf discovered the truth and warns Frodo, and stated that Gollum informed Sauron’s forces of Bilbo’s home. Samwise Gamgee Frodo’s best friend, joined with his friend’s journey to village of Bree. . Gandalf goes to Isengard to speak to Saruman the White but Saruman is revealed to be aiding Sauron, and he imprisons Gandalf on the roof of his tower Orthanc.

Frodo and Sam meet fellow Hobbits, Merry and Pippin, but they have to hide from the Ringwraiths. Arriving in Bree, they learn Gandalf is missing, but are joined by a mysterious ranger named Strider who escorts them to Rivendell. The Hobbits are ambushed by the Ringwraiths, one stabbing Frodo with a deathly morgul blade until Strider fends them off. Frodo is taken to Rivendell by Strider’s lover, the Elvin princess Arwen, and is healed by her father Lord Elrond. Gandalf arrives, having escaped Isengard on an eagle. Elrond holds a council Frodo volunteering to throw it into Mount Doom,and forms the Fellowship of the Ring, accompanied by , Gandalf, Sam, Merry, Pippin, dwarf Gimli, elf Legolas, Boromir of Gondor, and Strider, actually revealed to be Aragorn, a descendant of Isildur and rightful king of Gondor . Bilbo gives Frodo his old sword Sting. as a weapon.

 

 The Fellowship set out but when Saruman magically blocks off their path, they must venture into the dwarf Mines of Moria. They discover all of the dwarves have been slain by Orcs, and Gollum is secretly stalking them. They are attacked by the enemy accompanied by a troll but escape, only for a fiery demonic Balrog to awaken. Gandalf prevents the Balrog from pursuing the group, but is dragged into a chasm by the beast, believed to be dead. . Aragorn leads the mourning Fellowship to Lothlórien, home of Galadriel and Celeborn. Galadriel privately informs Frodo that the Ring will be a burden, and one of his friends will try to take the Ring. Meanwhile, Saruman forms an army of Uruk-hai to hunt down the Fellowship and bring the carrier of the Ring unharmed.

The group sail on to Parth Galen, where Boromir attempts to take the Ring from Frodo. Afraid of losing his friends to the Ring, Frodo decides to go off alone. The Uruk-hai arrive, and in the commotion, Merry and Pippin are taken captive, believed to be carriers, and Boromir is fatally shot with three arrows by the Uruk-hai commander Lurtz. Aragorn beheads Lurtz and helps the dying Boromir find peace. Sam pursues Frodo, informing him he must follow him as a promise he made to Gandalf. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli go to rescue Merry and Pippin, while Frodo and Sam head for Mordor.

Production and filming

Jackson, Walsh and Boyens made numerous changes to the story, for purposes of pacing and character development. In the book the time between Gandalf leaving the Ring to Frodo and returning to reveal its inscription, which is 17 years, is compressed for timing reasons. Arwen was given a greater role in the film, accompanying Frodo all the way to Rivendell, while in the book Frodo faced the Ringwraiths alone at the Ford of Bruinen. Also significant new addition is Aragorn's self-doubt, which causes him to hesitate to claim the kingship of Gondor. This element is not present in the book, where Aragorn intends to claim the throne at an appropriate time.

Filming took place in various locations across New Zealand. The Fellowship of the Ring makes extensive use of digital, practical and make-up special effects throughout. Like Elijah Wood, who plays Frodo, is 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m) tall in real life, but the character of Frodo Baggins is barely four feet in height. At one point in the film, Frodo runs along a corridor in Bag End, followed by Gandalf. Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen were filmed in separate versions of the same corridor, built at two different scales, and a fast camera pan conceals the edit between the two so that the characters would appear to be the appropriate size.

The Fellowship of the Ring received universal critical acclaim from major film critics and was one of 2001's best reviewed films. The film holds a 91% "Fresh" rating on aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes, based on 225 reviews, with an average score of 8.2/10. The film holds a score of 92 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 34 reviews, indicating "Universal Acclaim". Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars and Entertainment Weekly magazine gave the film an "A" rating for the film. USA Today also gave the film three out of four stars and In CinemaScore polls conducted during the opening weekend, cinema audiences gave the film an average grade of "A-".

Awards

In 2002, the film won four Academy Awards from thirteen nominations. The winning categories were for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup, and Best Original Score. The film won the 2002 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. It also won Empire readers' Best Film award, as well as five BAFTAs, including Best Film.
